Focke Wulf Fw-190D-9 Mimetall 1/72 IBG models

Focke Wulf FW-190 version D is definitely the most attractive variant of the whole development series. IBG is gradually launching the complete range and at first glance it is a truly beautiful model that tempts you to start building as soon as you buy it.

I bought the Dora kit as part of the “German Wave” still excited about Eduard’s Bf-109 series of models. IBG has released quite a few boxed versions of the Fw-190D and there are still a few more to come. I had originally planned to buy a dual combo and build the familiar Doras from JV 44 but in the end I figured I’d start with something simpler and purchase the box no. 72536 Fw 190D-9 Mimetall.

Before building, I reached out to a couple of colleagues who are knowledgeable on the subject and asked them for help with details. The kit does offer well done instructions, but having some of that extra info is always handy. I found the JaPo books quite helpful, I can definitely recommend them.

I believe that IBG offers the best series of the D version on the market so far. Certainly I wouldn’t throw out the Tamyia model and I wouldn’t waste the Hasegawa either. It’s more about what you expect from the model. IBG addresses the various differences between versions and production plants with specific parts, so you’ll really enjoy it if the Dora is your thing.

As I wrote, the model is really detailed, however, this can be both a benefit and an element that can make the build unpleasant. The way the various parts of the fuselage and wings are glued together is really demanding on the cleanliness and care of the build. Every tenth of milimeter counts and inaccuracies add up. I don’t usually have problems with geometry, but here it was literally the alchemy to keep everything fitting and nothing running anywhere. In the end, the result is satisfying, but at times I got really sweaty. Next time I’d know where I need to be careful, but honestly, I’m not planning on any “next time”.

The model will look great right out of the box, but I wouldn’t be me if I didn’t buy some accessories for the model. Namely an etched Zoom from Eduard, Master metal barrels, and several kits from Quick Boost, IBG and other manufacturers. I list them all below and can recommend them all without exception.

The paints are all but one shade complete from AK’s RC series. I like the shades on the late Luftwaffe camos, except for RLM 82 which I found too toxic so I replaced it with the same shade from Gunze H. Micro scale varnishes as usual, weathering and washes AK+AMMO.

IBG’s modelling has tempted me to the new IAR 81/82 range that has recently appeared on the market, but now I’m going to take a break and touch up some already started projects and hopefully finally get something from the Great War too 😊
